    Warning

Backup verification has not run for 41 days on VNT-SQL-PRD-03

    What we found

Full backups are written for all 26 databases on this instance, but no restore verification has succeeded since 26 July. A backup nobody has restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.

    Why it matters to you

Vanterra's freight tracking database sits on this instance. If a restore fails when you actually need it, your recovery point is the last verified backup, which is six weeks old. That is a reportable data loss, not an IT inconvenience.

    What to do

Re-enable the verification job on the maintenance plan and let it run against the secondary. Cortex confirms it on the next daily run and closes the finding on its own.

Four databases hold personal data without TDE enabled

    What we found

Transparent Data Encryption is off on four databases holding driver and consignee records. The data files and every backup of them are readable by anyone who can copy the file off the volume.

    Why it matters to you

These databases fall under GDPR. Unencrypted at rest is the finding an auditor writes down first, and it is a one-setting fix.

Availability group has not synchronised for 3 days

    What we found

The secondary replica in Frankfurt is behind by 3 days and 40 GB of log. The group still reports as configured, which is exactly why this is easy to miss.

    Why it matters to you

You are paying for a high availability setup that would not currently fail over. The gap widens every day it goes unnoticed.

Autogrowth set to 1 MB on a 2.4 TB database

    What we found

The warehouse database grows in 1 MB steps. Every growth event pauses writes, and at this size it happens hundreds of times a day.

    Why it matters to you

This is the slow, invisible tax that gets reported as "the system feels sluggish in the afternoon". It costs nothing to fix.

SQL Server 2014 and 2016 are out of extended support

    What we found

One instance runs SQL Server 2014 SP3 and one runs SQL Server 2016 SP3. Extended support ended on 9 July 2024 and 15 July 2026, so neither receives security updates unless you buy an Extended Security Updates subscription.

    Why it matters to you

This is a budget line, not a ticket. Both boxes are running unpatched today, and an ESU subscription costs a percentage of the licence every year you delay.

    What we found

The freight tracking database accepts connections from any IP address. The firewall rule that opened it was added for a migration in March and never removed.

    Why it matters to you

Your most sensitive database is reachable from the public internet and protected only by a password. A private endpoint closes it in an afternoon.

    What we found

Backup redundancy is set to locally redundant. A regional outage in West Europe takes the database and its backups at the same time.

    Why it matters to you

Vanterra's own continuity policy promises a second region. Right now the configuration does not deliver it.

    What we found

Six machines have run below 12 percent CPU for thirty days. Advisor puts the saving from resizing them at 3,180 euro a month.

    Why it matters to you

This is the part of the report that pays for the assessment. It is also the easiest to act on, because nothing about the workload changes.

    Message

The Freight Analytics workspace is not assigned to any Fabric capacity. Its reports fall back to shared capacity, where refreshes queue behind everyone else's.

    Why it matters to you

This is the workspace the planners open at 06:00. Detached workspaces also sit outside your capacity governance, so nobody is watching what they cost.

The F16 capacity hit its ceiling on 9 of the last 10 working days between 08:00 and 10:00, and queries were throttled.

    Why it matters to you

See what Cortex knows about a data estate

This is the Cortex interface, filled with data from a company that does not exist. Vanterra Logistics is a fictional Rotterdam freight operator with 17 SQL Server instances, three Azure subscriptions and a Microsoft Fabric tenant.

Every name, number and finding in this demo is invented. No customer data appears anywhere in it.
